The name Burr Ridge comes from Colonel John Burr, who died in 1838 while serving as military governor of Illinois under Ulysses S. Grant. A water tower and other early buildings are still standing today in the town center, which is home to a number of businesses including a bank, a grocery store, and an auto dealership. During World War I, Burr Ridge served as headquarters for General Pershing's 11th Infantry Division during its operations around Chicago during World War I. After the war ended, the division moved to Fort Sheridan nearby before being disbanded in 1922. In 1945-1946, it played host to Operation Crossroads which saw American forces invading Nazi Germany through Lake Michigan; this event has been called "the most notorious battle of World War II". 1

The community experienced growth during World War II with many residents enlisting in service including many women who worked at local munitions factories. After the war, Burr Ridge began to decline but has since regained some popularity due to its vibrant arts scene, good schools, and easy access to transportation such as public transportation and Interstate highways
Burr Ridge was one of the first towns in Illinois. It was founded on the east side of the Mississippi River by General James K. Polk and his family in 1847. The town was named after General John C. Burr, who served as a member of the United States Congress from New York and as Vice President under Ulysses S. Grant.
