Burr Ridge is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Burr Ridge is named after General George Burr, who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a U.S. Senator from New York. The first settler in Burr Ridge was James Pemberton, who arrived on November 3, 1837. He and his family were the first white people to live in what would become Burr Ridge. James Pemberton died in 1839 and his wife Sarah soon moved into their home with their five children: John (1840-1924), Anna (1842-1930), Frances (1845-1915), Charles (1848-1926) and Mary Jane (1850-1927). In 1859, John Pemberton Jr., John's son by Sarah, married Ellen Sprague of Park Forest IL and they started a farm there too which they continued to operate until 1886 when they sold it to Abram Hrdy of Downers Grove IL for $1 million dollars ($ at current values). After purchasing this land from Hrdy, Abram subdivided it into townships with Burr Ridge being located in Township 5 Northumberland which he called "Ridgeville". When township 5 was disbanded due to mergers with other townships during World War II some residents chose to move away since their homes had been lost or destroyed during that time period such as when Elmwood Heights became Elmwood Park after merging with Rogers Park onto Willingboro Road originally known as Elmhurst Avenue(now State Street). Some others decided to stay put because they enjoyed living close enough to shopping malls like Arden Hills Village Shopping Center and Keystone Center while still having access to all the activities available from the larger communities. After World War II ended some of these residents decided that their children should have a chance for educational opportunities also so James Pemberton III took over operation of Elks Lodge No 649 lodge where he still resides today and has been member ever since 1941 making him one of history's longest continuously active members!
Burr Ridge is a town in Danville Township, Cook County, Illinois. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It was originally named Burr Ridge after General James Butler who fought in the American Revolution.
