Burr Ridge, Illinois is a small town in southern Illinois. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Carbondale-Munster, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area. Burr Ridge is about one hour drive from Chicago and two hours from Springfield. The community was founded in 1873 by John Burr and his wife Martha. Burr was an entrepreneur who established a general store and grist mill in the community. He also built a church and helped to found the First Congregational Church of Burr Ridge in 1875. The town grew quickly after Burr's death in 1881. By 1907, Burr Ridge had a school, post office, physician, dentist and several businesses including a hardware store and grocery store. In 1914, the first Masonic lodge was organized in Burr Ridge with 28 members. The community experienced significant growth during World War II as many men served in the military or were drafted into service. The post office closed in 1945 but reopened two years later under new management with more services such as mail delivery, local elections and citizenship classes for civilians living within range of military installations). In 1969, Burrridge became home to its first high school when Carbondale-Munster High School opened on South County Road 927A (now State Route 24). Carbondale-Munster High School offered 12th through 8th grades while Burr Ridge High School offered 9th through 12th grade until it closed in 2002 due to budget cuts by then- Superintendent Don Fenton*. In recent years there have been attempts to revive both the old school building (which has been on the market for multiple properties since 2007*) as well as establish new facilities within or near Burr Ridge* (*See "History of Carbondale-Munster" for more information).
