The community had a post office from 1858 until it closed in 1957. Burr Ridge has a library which opened its doors on October 1st, 1954 and currently contains over 60,000 items including books, magazines and newspapers dating back to the early 1800s. The library also maintains an online archive which includes more than 4 million pages of materials from local newspapers from across Kane County and Illinois during the late 19th century through to today Burr Ridge has two schools: Cook Elementary School which serves students grades K-8th (along with special needs programs) and Carr Elementary School serving students grades 9th-12th (along withMartin Luther King Jr./JFK Magnet High School). Carr Elementary features a courtyard that provides natural educational opportunities for students as they learn about plants and animals while also having access to applied science classes such as robotics laboratories

Burr Ridge is a small town in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Burr Ridge was platted in 1864 by Alexander Burr, a son of George Burr, who also founded Elmhurst and Forest Park. It was named for General James Wilkinson Randolph who fought in the American Civil War as a general on the Union side. The village of Burr Ridge was incorporated on April 15, 1865 and became part of the city of Chicago on November 3rd, 1871. The first post office opened in Burr Ridge on October 16th, 1868. By 1870, there were six stores and seventy-six residents. The village had two schools and three churches. In 1888 it had five stores and ninety-four residents; one school still operates today. By 1900 there were nine stores with one hundred fifty residents; four schools operated; one store burned down in 1902; and the village corporation lost its charter to be an independent municipality on December 14th due to financial problems caused by World War I trench warfare within Chicago's boundaries that year alone In 1924, when Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) moved from Normal to Carbondale above Vermilion River Community College (VRCC), SIUC renamed itself Carbondale State Teachers College (later UIUC). Carbondale State Teachers College offered undergraduate courses through its own campus buildings across from SIUE's main campus until 1969 when all undergraduate courses were transferred to UIUC's main campus under then-president Neil Armstrong’s guidance as an effort to improve student access to quality education opportunities throughout Chicagoland In 1970–71 SIUE entered into an affiliation agreement with City Colleges of Chicago which merged both campuses' programs into one comprehensive program under then-city controller Richard J.
