Burr Ridge is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,613 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Burr Ridge community was founded in 1871 by three brothers: John Burr, George Burr and James Burr. John Burr had been born in 1796 in Northumberland Township, Maryland; George Burr had been born in 1798 in Cumberland County, Virginia; and James Burr had been born on October 6, 1800 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The first post office was established at Burr Ridge on March 25, 1871. The community originally consisted of just a few homes and a schoolhouse. The first store opened within the boundaries of Burr Ridge on May 12th of that year by Wm Hutton and Bros., which functioned as the nucleus around which development took place over time. By 1875 there were six stores operating within the town limits; four of these stores were operated by men from outside of the community itself (John Lennon's father owned one). In 1880–1881 local employees helped build a new courthouse for Cook County; this structure served as an important center for civic life within the town until it burned down in 1937. Growth continued to occur throughout most of the 20th century with increasing numbers of residents coming into contact with one another through social activities such as churches and schools. Though some residents did leave during difficult times – such as during World War II when many people left to join war effort – most people here stuck around for their entire lifetimes or longer because they found support and opportunities hereabouts unavailable elsewhere. Though much has changed since then including economic difficulties faced by other communities adjacent to Burr Ridge – such as South Elgin Townships – it is still possible to witness some significant aspects of what made this community so special right up until today such as its vibrantreek-based economy or its close-knit society where everyone knows everyone else inside and out.
