The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. According to The Daily Herald, Burr Ridge was developed around 1855 as a farming town with homes for farmers and their families. By 1900 it had become an industrial center with heavy manufacturing including ammunition, shoes and cigars. In 1945, Burr Ridge became home to Ballistic Research Laboratories (BRL) which developed methods for making nuclear weapons. Today BRL is part of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and it continues to produce nuclear weapons research through its subsidiary plutonium production facility. Burr Ridge is located in the eastern part of Johnson County and borders the towns of Carbondale and Algonquin. It lies on the east bank of the Kankakee River. The first Europeans to settle in Burr Ridge were French traders and missionaries who founded a mission in 1782. The post office was established in 1807. In 1825, Burr Ridge was organized as a township from parts of Carbondale Township and Algonquin Township. In 1851, it became a village when it merged with Carbondale Village. The village had a total population of 554 people in 1880. In 1911, Burr Ridge became part of the new city of Chicago through an amalgamation process that included other villages within Johnson County as well as surrounding counties including Cook and McHenry Counties. Chicago annexed Burr Ridge on December 12, 1914. Burr Ridge is home to two high schools: Carbondale High School (which opened in 1927) and Algonquin High School (which opened in 1959). There are also three elementary schools: Jane Addams Elementary School (opened in 1949), Hoover Elementary School (opened in 1951), and Mill Creek Elementary School (openedin 1954).
