On November 3rd 1860, during an election contest that took place over many days due to civil unrest after Abraham Lincoln's victory over congressman Stephen Douglas in Douglas' home state of Missouri (the only Ulysses S Grant presidential victory), Burr Ridge residents sent their vote for him as their Presidential elector even though they could not travel because they were required to attend military service in Tennessee or Mississippi during that season. After taking office on January 20th 1861, Lincoln issued Executive Order 9586 giving preference to Union
