It also prevents you from accidentally firing a shot if you are not in possession of a magazine with active rounds.

In 1984, a man named Gerald Hawkins killed three people and wounded four others in a shooting at an apartment complex in Burr Ridge. In 1992, a gunman opened fire on a crowd of people attending a party in Burr Ridge. One person was killed and two were injured.
Burr Ridge, Illinois is a small town located in the far corner of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Burr Ridge is one of the oldest villages in Cook County and has been around since 1839. The village was founded by Alexander Burr and his family on a tract of land that he bought from John Hull. The Burr family operated a grocery store and mill for many years before moving away to nearby Prospect Heights in 1892. In 1907, the Burr estate was sold to George Pullman and his family who built Pullman Station on its site. Pullman continued to live there until his death in 1949; after which ownership passed through several families until it was purchased by the City of Chicago in 1978. The city renovated much of the property including building an elementary school and a library on one side, and creating a park on the other side with a playground, tennis courts, swimming pool, basketball court, children's museum (now called The Museum at Bryant Park), and community center (now called One America Plaza). Today, Burr Ridge remains an active community with many businesses serving its citizens including two churches (one Baptist and one Methodist), two schools (Elementary School #1-5th grade on Indiana Street and High School #2), two libraries (the former Pullman Library now closed but still used as an elementary school resource center), one doctor's office/ urgent care clinic/ grocery store/ full service restaurant/ video game arcade/, three bars/ five convenience stores/, four housing developments (), two golf courses () as well as several thousand square feet of commercial space ().

On February 14th, 2007, Jack Russell terrier mix named Fluffy died after being shot by a Kansas City police officer while playing with his owners children outside their home in suburban Kansas City. At first it was thought that Fluffy may have had mistaken the toy gun for an actual weapon; however later reports indicated that Fluffy was playing with a toy gun which had been left inside the family’s locked car parked outside their house when officers responded to a noise complaint from neighbors about 3:00PM that day. Despite this tragedy, gun control measures have received increasing attention from both legislators and public opinion since then due to instances such as this one where children are mistakenly attracted to guns rather than toys

Another effort was the Gun control act of 1968, which increased regulation on firearms and made it easier to get licences and registrations.
