Upon reincorporation as a town in 1982, Burr Ridge adopted its current name from its original namesake: Burke County (now Van Buren) had been an open territory west of the city limits between 1815 and 1829; under territorial government it included parts of what are now Kane and Will counties. As a result of suburbanization within Cook County over the past few decades, much of Burr ridge has become either inner-city or exurban areas with very limited access to rural life outside ofChicago; some residents still maintain strong ties to their rural roots however. The lack of any significant economic center has also impacted social aspects such as attendance at local churches and civic engagement - many residents now identify with their urban surroundings more than their rural ones despite retaining vestiges of their farming heritage throughout much of their lives
