Burr Ridge is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. Burr Ridge is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by the towns of Skokie to the south and west, Oak Lawn to the north and east, and Wheaton to the northeast. The first settlers who moved into Burr Ridge were Methodists from Kentucky who founded what is now called Burr Ridge Church in 1846. The community's name was derived from General John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry in 1775 which left 100 men dead and many more wounded. In 1868 Burr Ridge became one of 20 communities formed as a result of the American Civil War which brought about an influx of new people and businesses to Burr Ridge. By 1900 there were 246 residents living in Burr Ridge with a total income of $30,000. During World War II there were two bombings at Burr Ridge Elementary School that killed three children and injured 14 others; both perpetrators were apprehended after their attack. After the war ended, business boomed thanks to technological advances such as television production and refrigeration which allowed for increased farming opportunities in rural areas like Burr Ridge. Today, despite some economic setbacks, Burr ridge remains a vibrant community with active businesses that promote social justice issues such as environmentalism and renewable energy sources; it also has strong ties to its Methodist roots through its churches which still provide services within the community today despite changing demographics (i.e., more recent immigrants). Overall, it seems that while some challenges remain – such as low median household income – things are slowly but surely improving for this staunchly middle class community located just minutes away from Chicago's skyscrapers!
