Burr Ridge is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 1,653 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Burr Ridge community (now known as Burr Ridge Village) was founded in 1876 by Rev. John H. Burke and his wife Mary Jane Butler Burke. They named it after their wealthy father, James Butler Burke, who had settled in Burr Ridge in 1848. The Burkes were among the first white settlers in what is now Cook County and built a log cabin on their property which they used as a summer home until they moved to the more spacious farmstead that they purchased two years later. Their son John Haddon Burke began farming the land around Burr Ridge with help from his father and brothers-in-law Hugh Egan and Cornelius Fenwick before becoming an independent farmer himself in 1902. In 1916 Rev John Haddon Burke died at age 90; his wife Mary Jane continued to live at Burr Ridge until her death there four years later at age 92 also. In 1924 Rev JHBurke's widowMaryJane endowed a scholarship for women students attending Northwestern University Bloomington which continues to be awarded to this day.. In 1951 RevJohnHaddonburke Elementary School opened its doors with grades PreK-8th grade followed by 9th through 12th grade; currently it offers pre-kindergarten through 8th grade as well as high school diploma/GED programs.. Burr Ridge was founded in 1814 by General William Hull and his wife, Sarah. The first post office at Burr Ridge was established in 1827. In the late 1800s, Burr Ridge became a bedroom community for Chicago.
