These larger muscles allowed humans to shift from being primarily bipedal intoquadrupedal through less adaptation required by the environment (Porter 2009). As humans developed further along their evolutionary path, they began traveling more widely away from their natural habitats (Drake 2003). This led to the need for new methods of locomotion that could be sustained over extended periods of time without food or water shortages (Moses 2006). One successful method was called “bipedalism” because it allowed people not onlyto cross long distances but alsoto do so while carrying heavy objects with them (Hansen 1986: 20-21) . Bipedals soon became known as travelers because they could travel long distances quickly without any need for food or water sources

The original village had only three buildings: a post office, a store, and a school. In 1890, Burr Ridge acquired an addition to its western side that doubled as its first courthouse. In 1906, Burr Ridge became the first town in Cook County to be governed by independent City Councils when it merged with nearby Addison. On January 1, 1907, the village of Addison merged into Burr Ridge as well. Burr Ridge has experienced significant growth over the years; in 2000 it had 4500 residents and by 2006 had 11000 residents. The current shopping district which extends from Main Street east to Interstate 94 includes several large stores including Sears (now Kmart), JCPenney (), Macy's (), Sears Tower (), and Home Depot (). The development of this shopping district has helped contribute to Burr Ridge's rapid growth rate over the years - since 2000 it has seen an increase of 50%. It also contains two high schools: Burr Ridge High School and Addison-based Hinsdale Central High School (formerly Villa Park HS). There are also smaller middle schools located within walking distance of both high schools; these include White Settlement Middle School (also located within walking distance of Addison High School) and Garden Grove Middle School (). The community contains several parks such as Deerfield Park () which houses tennis courts, playgrounds,, football fields,, basketball courts,,,, etc., as well as half-acre beaches known as "The Beach".
