Burr Ridge is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 23,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Burr Ridge" is derived from John Burr, who founded the town in 1834. The first settlers were farmers and their families who arrived in 1831 from Virginia and Maryland. They named their new community Burr Ridge after General John Burr, who had been killed in a duel two years earlier. He had been an important figure in the American Revolution and helped tofound the United States of America. The first post office was established in 1833, and by 1840 there were 10 houses in the town. By 1860 there were 150 people living here. During its early days Burr Ridge was a small farming community with few non-residential buildings other than some outhouses and a store (the first known building on this site). By 1870 it contained about 45 dwellings, three schools (one private), one jail (later moved to Grayslake), one church (built by Presbyterians), several businesses including a hardware store and gristmill, foursmithy shop, five stores including two groceries/bargain stores and two feed mills, five sawmills and six tanneries along with seven or eight cattle sheds. A cotton gin was built soon afterward for processing Indian corn that was being grown nearby by local farmers on large fields near what is now Elston Avenue north of I-94 between Green Bay Road east of Interstate 94 and Farmington Rd south of I-294 just northeast of Elmhurst High School
