The first permanent settler in what would become Burbank was John H. Bradford in 1837. He named his land "Bradfordville". In 1839-1840 Abraham Lincoln made an unsuccessful attempt to found a settlement here called "Lincolnburgh" after president Ulysses S. Grant's father-in-law and namesake; but the site never developed into anything more than a small farmstead because of lack of water resources. In 1847 John Pritzker bought 3 acres (1 hectare) of land on the east side of what is now Cicero Avenue from James McNeely for $2 million (). Pritzker founded what would eventually be known as Bryn Mawr High School which opened its doors on September 15th, 1848 and became one of America's first womens' colleges with an enrollment of 350 students (). In 1888 construction began on Chicago's first electric streetcar line between the terminals at Northeastern Avenue and Michigan Avenue/Washington Boulevard/Wabash Street/Evanston Road. The line ran south from Lake Shore Drive to South Park Place before turning east on Harrison Street to reach Illinois Square West (now North Side). It operated until 1912 when it was replaced by a new route that linked State Street/ Stroger Plaza with Michigan Avenue/Wabash Street/Evanston Road (). In 1902 he also founded Wrigley Field which became one of Major League Baseball (MLB)'s flagship teams and remains one of Chicago's most popular tourist destinations today (). On October 12th, 1893 – two years after incorporation – Burbank residents voted 54% in favor of incorporation into Cook County; this vote followed their success in successfully petitioning for annexation by Chicago nineteen months earlier (. There has never been any indication that Burbank ever entertained annexation consideration again despite its high voter turnout). After brief experimentation with electric streetcars beginning on November 5th 1904 operating out from State Street terminal via Congress Parkway towards Hubbard Ave., service was discontinued due to financial instability caused by heavy use during World War I & II coupled with deterioration in infrastructure including Line 3 replacement work starting on May 6th 1919 necessitating closure along Harrison St just south thereof - this shutdown cost taxpayers over $140 million () . After World War II ended there continued heavy traffic volume leading to arterialization taking away right-of-way - resulting in loss or forfeiture (to Cook County coffers) some 515 parcels comprising north shoreline lands consistent with prewar zoning extraterritoriality ..... This pattern continued unabated through burbs consolidation until 1989 when all vestiges were eliminated following approval by county board granting annexation results ......
