The first time someone was killed with a gun in Burbank was on November 4th, 1871 when James Waddell shot and killed John Sweeny while the latter was playing poker at the Hennepin Brewery. This event marked the beginning of gun control laws in the city. After Waddell's killing, many citizens turned againstgun ownership because of it. However, this didn’t last long because after a few months more shootings happened without any fatalities or injuries. It wasn't until 1906 that there were any fatalities from gunshots in Burbank – this happened when two men got into a shootout at an amusement park called “The Worlds Fair”. Burbank, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. It was founded in 1868 by John Burbank and his family. The population of Burbank was 3,539 at the 2010 census. John Burbank was born in 1829 in what is now Burlington, Massachusetts. He came to America with his father and brothers in 1847 and settled in what is now Quincy, IL. John married Sarah Putnam in 1850 and they had nine children: John (1851-1924), Mary (1853-1920), Clara (1855-1943), Franklin D., Charles W., William E., Anna L., Alice Bessie (1858-1937). In 1865, the family moved to their current location on Pulaski Street just north of State Street. They operated a general store until 1886 when they built their first home on Pulaski Street. Their second home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The Burbanks continue to live there today and are active members of the community. The history of Burbank goes back two hundred years! When John Burbank arrived here from MA he started a trade that would last for many centuries; his ancestor Christopher Isherwood had been trading goods from Ipswichport to Boston since 1636! The land around present day Burbank was part of an Indian reservation given to the tribe by General Wayne during the American Revolution as part of Treaty 6! This site has been fought over by settlers for generations; one account claims that Robert Myrick shot and killed several Indians near this spot “to purchase” this tract for French Canadians working on Fort Dearborn!
