The railroad arrived in 1855 and Burbank became an important center for transportation due to its location near two railroads: the Northwestern Pacific Railroad (later Conrail) andMilwaukee Road. In 1914–15 there were mass layoffs at General Electric's Chicago plant due to World War I munitions production restrictions; as a result many small businesses failed and burbanks lost much business revenue during this time period. However, things changed after GE reopened operations following World War II when new industries sprang up such as aerospace manufacturers Boeing Co., Lockheed Martin Corp., Raytheon Co., Panasonic Corporation etc.; allocating significant jobs within Burbank proper as well as surrounding neighborhoods making it more economically viable than ever before for businesses to locate there overall unlike during wartime when few job opportunities were available outside the city limits itself In 1974–1975 general manager Don Ritchie developed plans for redevelopment of what then lay vacant land bordering Elmira Street eastward between Archer Avenue and Elmira Boulevard; resulting in over 100 buildings being demolished or converted into high-end housing including 50 homes owned by Sears Roebuck & Company who leased them back to avoid demolition; followed by Apple Computer's move from Wayne State University's main campus down Eisenhower Parkway into downtown Burbank limits which created intense demand for parking spaces adjacent thereto - opening up new markets along Eisenhower Parkway such as Midtown Burbank becoming home to some local corporate headquarters including Abbott Laboratories Incorporated while other large companies located further west (eastern suburbs) like Ford Motor Company moved out altogether leaving only small numbers of employees behind - finally leading to incorporation of Multnomah Development Company Limited Partnership with representatives coming from every major north suburban/southeast suburban company represented therein - resulting in increased development potential throughout east central Downtown Burban while still providing ample street parking

Additionally, he constructed several schools – including one serving today as Northwestern University's undergraduate college campus – within the city limits.
