In 1836, Buffalo Grove was organized as a village in the Town of Danville. The first post office was established in 1837, and the first school was built in 1840. In 1851, Buffalo Grove became a town. The first mayor was John A. Smith. The population of Buffalo Grove grew to over 1,000 people by 1860. By 1870, Buffalo Grove had become a suburb of Chicago.
