However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Buffalo Grove became an important military stronghold due to its strategic location on the southern border of DuPage County between Champaign County and Cook County. Consequently, many Buffalos were drafted into service and some died in combat. After the war ended, Buffalo Grove slowly declined as larger communities rose up around it. However, through hard work and dedication by local officials such as Mayor Harry Weisenthal (1932-1945) and Supervisor John Kapp (1947-1963), Buffalo Grove has experienced a resurgence over recent years with 6,000 residents currently living there
