The first known settlers in what is now Buffalo Grove were Quakers who arrived in 1787 and named their settlement after the Buffalo river which they located on their farmstead near present-day Maywood. This early settler community grew slowly until 1815 when a group of families from Decatur Township moved to a tract of land east of present-day Buffalo Grove and called it 'New Auburn'. The new arrivals formed an agricultural society that built roads, erected fences and began raising livestock. In 1871, the Erie Railroad reached Buffalo Grove and began serving this town with passenger trains. As more people came to live here, farmland became available for housing development and businesses sprang up around the railroad depot and schoolhouse. By 1920, there were over 200 homes within walking distance of the local libraries and churches. In 1955, when Kane County was merged into Cook County, Buffalo Grove became one of its original villages.
