Brookfield was founded in 1837 and incorporated as a village in 1868. The name "Brookfield" comes from an early settler's farmstead name, "Brooksfeld." The village of Brookfield was first established on the east side of present-day Brookline Avenue by John Pomeroy and his sons John and Peter in 1837. They named their land after the brook that ran through it. The brook became known locally as "the stream" because it passed through the town several times before becoming a river. However, when there were two villages set up near each other (BrookFIELD on the west side of present-day Northbrook Road and Elmira on the east side), BrooksFIELD got to be more popular so they decided to keep their name for themselves despite having less water than Elmira. Brookfield first opened its doors to residents on July 1, 1868 when it became part of Arlington Township which was then part of Cook County. At that time there were only 3 or 4 businesses open in what is now Brookfield including one grocery store (later converted into a feed store) and three schools: one public school, one private school (later merged with Arlington Township), and one academy which eventually closed down due to financial problems in 1984-1985. In 1976-1977 there was also construction work done on I-65 which made road access more difficult so most businesses closed down during that time as well but some reopened once things calmed down again until 2008 when all but one business closed down again along with much of downtowndue to new development around I-65/Southwest Expressway just north of town center! In recent years though improvements have been made like new sidewalks and lighting throughout many areas making life easier for consumers as well as developers who are looking for high quality housing options within walking distance or minutes by bike or car; this has helped revive some retail establishments such as KFC where services are now available 24/7 outside while also bringing back businesses located inside buildings such as Dry Goods Outlet Center & Hobby Lobby Plus between Walgreens & Sears locations within walking distance while still giving customers options for biking or driving too!

Brookfield is a city in northwestern Illinois, United States. The population was 25,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County. Brookfield was founded in 1834 by John Leland and other settlers. The city's first mayor was Solomon Northrup. In 1907, the Chicago-based Pullman Railway built a line through Brookfield and established a towneve called Pullman on its right-of-way. The townve name changed to Brookfield in 1930 when the railroad merged with the Chicago Central Railroad. Brookfield has a humid continental climate with cold winters and hot summers; it experiences about average precipitation for Illinois during winter and summer months combined. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Brookfield has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa". The history of Brookfield can be traced back to 1834 when John Leland founded what would become known as “the village” or “township” of Brookfield on land he had purchased from David Brodhead east of present day Chicago Heights Boulevard and north of Ulysses S Grant Park (now Dearborn Street). At that time, Illinois was still part of Indiana Territory and there were no municipal boundaries between townships/villages/cities within Indiana Territory – this meant that each township or village had its own councils which functioned primarily as police officers, firemen, etc., responsible for internal security and public works duties such as rubbish collection etc.; these functions were later transferred to respective cities or towns within Kane County when those areas became detached from Indiana Territory in 1847. Shortly after settling in his new community at Rockford Creek (now west side of I-88), Mr. Leland began marketing what became known as “the famous Bleeker Brewery”: this beer was brewed using water from Rockford creek which flowed through his property into an underground stream then out again into Lake Michigan via an outlet near modern day Rolling Meadows Cemetery; it took several years until Mr. Leland had enough volume to begin shipping beer directly to market – beginning with New York City in early 1837! In 1840 Mrs Leland married Miss Lydia Haggerty; they would continue residing in their home until her death in 1865. With over 20 residents already living here by 1850 (!),MrLeland started construction on what would become today’s downtown area which included the first schoolhouse (1845), Masonic Temple (1846), Post Office building (1848) & jail (1851).
