Brookfield is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,245 at the 2010 census. Brookfield is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is the most populous city in that area. It straddles the border of Cook County and Kane County. The first settlement in what would become Brookfield was made on May 6, 1814 by Captain George Rogers Clark and his group of thirteen men as they traveled northwest from Springfield to explore new land grants. The name "Brookfield" was given to them by General Anthony Wayne during their exploration of northwestern Illinois. The village of Brookfield began to form around 1835 when a tract of land between present-day Elmhurst Road and Skokie Boulevard was bought by Ezra Stiles and Daniel Haines for $1,000. At this time there were only three Hundred fifty people living in Brookfield Village; it had grown to over two thousand people by 1865 when it became one of the ten townships that formed DuPage County. In 1871, a group led by Nicholas Sanger purchased 640 acres (258 hectares) northeast of present day Brookfield Village for $5 per acre ($2/acre), which would become St Johns Park today. One hundred years later, on October 20th, 2013 Mayor Denis Ziegler announced plans for the park's opening with groundbreaking taking place later that year following approval from the village board . In addition to creating an 813-acre (309 hectare) park with lakeside walks, trails and sports fields; this project also included demolition or renovation of many buildings within the village dating back to its early days including: The Old School House which housed both school district office equipment as well as classrooms for grades K-8; Noor’s Bakery where bread was baked until 1947 before moving into its current location at 625 Wabash Ave.; Dempster’s Drug Store which operated from 1874 until 1951; Sears Department store which opened in 1925 across from Joe’s Pizza while also serving as firehouse #3 until 1958; North Side Baptist Church founded in 1895 on property now occupied by First Lutheran Church located south east corner Elmhurst Rd./Skokie Blvd.; Holy Name Catholic Church built 1928 across Elmhurst Rd./Skokie Blvd.; American Legion Post #2 established 1922 on property now occupied by Stroger Hospital building north side corner Skokie Blvd.-northwest corner Cherry Hill Dr., also home to Our Lady Queen Of Peace Parish since 1935 according to parish records . These structures are but a few examples among many that have long been part of our village communityscape providing services such as public education , transportation , housing , banking - all without having any impact whatsoever on crime rates or social stability . There are currently over ninety buildings still standing throughout our villages nearly 350 years history! Today we continue these traditions through events like “Village Days” where residents & visitors come together enjoy local arts & crafts galleries Vendors set up shop including antique open air market / flea market opportunitiesities abound ... What has happened here over time should not be taken lightly - it is what makes us unique!

The first European settlers in what is now Brookfield were Frenchmen who arrived as part of La Salle's Voyage du Nord in 1795. In 1803, Englishman John Stephenson purchased land east of present-day Brookfield from the French for $15 peracre (1¢ per acre). He built a sawmill and gristmill on current-day Stevenson Road and named it Stephenson Mills after himself. By 1807, Stephenson's mills had become one of the largest operations in Illinois. In 1835, he sold his business to Abraham Lincoln for $10,000 ($ ). The first store opened in what is now downtown Brookfield when Lincoln moved into his house on Dearborn Street near North Avenue in 1836. In 1840, Amos Kendall bought land west of present-day Brookfeldt Drive from John Stephenson for $25 peracre ($0.75 cents an acre). Kendall developed this land into a prosperous farming community that included several stores and two churches by 1860. A millrace ran south from present-day Kendall Drive to White Marsh Creek where corn was ground for flour until 1865; then whiskey was distilled from cash crops such as potatoes until 1870s when Prohibition made alcoholic liquor illegal across America In 1881, local businessmen organized with other cities around America to form the National Industrial Recovery Act which caused businesses throughout the US to expand their operations during this time period withbrookfield being one of them . After World War I ended and American production slowed down due to shortages caused by war efforts abroadBrookfield experienced rapid growth due to new construction (much of it housing), social services (including health clinics) and job opportunities during peacetime while still keeping its small town feel
