Brookfield is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois. As of the 2010 census, the population was 61,724. The city is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Brookfield was platted in 1836 by General John Brownell and his brother Israel Potter as one of twenty-five towns on the east side of Chicago where he proposed a canal through what is now Cook County to bring water from Lake Michigan to Chicago proper. The first homes were built in 1840 on land that would later become part of Brookfield Hills Shopping Center on the southern edge of town, now part of Northbrook Village shopping center across from Northwestern University's Feinberg School Of Medicine. At that time, all but two blocks north were forested; today only a few small businesses remain near where early settlers gathered for their day-to-day lives: blacksmithsmiths at Hickory Point forge shop (now demolished), sawmills at White Oak Grove mill (now demolished), farmers who raised chickens at Waukegan Heights orchard (now EKG Health Care's corporate headquarters complex), grocery stores such as druggists' shops, hardware stores and feed stores, cafeterias serving hot food until 2 a.m., and schools like Sacred Heart High School which became one block long by 1960 when Northwest Side Elementary School moved into its present building adjacent to South Shore Middle School Brookfield has been continuously inhabited since 1836 according to evidence found at various sites throughout town including churches dating back to 1835, more than 50 cemetery burials dating back to 1800+,early fire starting tools including poker lifts used for loading logs onto wagons for shipment out West during those pioneer days plus numerous Revolutionary War era items notably an American flagpole from Elmhurst Township which can be seen atop Building No 5 on Old Main Street today

In 1836, Abraham Lincoln was elected to succeed Stephen Mather as President of the United States and re-elected twice more before he died in office on April 12, 1865; this event marked both his inauguration as president and Boston's victory over Chicago in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 which destroyed much of downtown Chicago that year. Abraham Lincoln had lived near Brookfield since he was a boy; his father Isaac Quincy Lincoln had built a log cabin here while he served as Sheriff of Winnebago County, Illinois during part of that time period (). After Abraham Lincoln's death, his son Edward Muhlenberg took control of White House duties () until Ulysses S Grant succeeded him on March 4th,,1868 (). On November 6th., 1898 - also during Ulysses S Grant's presidency - an actwas passed by Congress authorising inhabitantsof all 50 states to form "a national home guard" to help protect their citizens from crime or insurrection abroad (). On October 14th., 1901 - only three months into President Theodore Roosevelt's first term - a billwas introducedinto Congress authorising expenditures for "the purpose Of creating an American Protective Union" (), later becoming known as National Guard Bureau (). On May 3rd., 1909 - just one year into Franklin D. Roosevelt's second term as president () - another measurewas introducedinto Congressauthorising appropriations for "an organization called `The National Defense Association' ()".
