Brookfield was founded in 1836 by John Fisk and Timothy Goodspeed as a small community on the west side of Chicago. Morse intended to create a new center for his company's operations that would be more efficient than Evanston's existing building space. soon after moving into their new headquarters, Sears started acquiring other businesses throughout the city including Wards Cycle Shop (later renamed Sears Carpet Warehouse), Woolen Mills (later renamed Wards Machine & Tool Co.), Northwestern Electric Light Manufacturing Company (now Northeastern Electric Lights), Hotel Astor (now Marriott) – all within blocks of each other on State Street between Randolph and Saginaw Streets. This rapid expansion led to what became known as "The Village", which stretched along Randolph Street from State Avenue eastward until it met up with Dearborn Avenue south of McCormick Place/the Field Museum complex on Armour Road just north of I-94/I-88 junction.
