Brookfield, Ill., is a city in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 24,711 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by the county of Kane to the south, DuPage County to the east, and Cook County to the north. Brookfield is known for its manufacturing plants and other businesses that produce goods such as automobiles, paper products, clothing and food processing equipment. The city also has a large educational system with four public universities - Northwestern University in Evanston, La Salle University in Chicago Heights, and Loyola Marymount University in Chicago - as well as private schools including Rushmore College[1] and Wheaton College.[2] The name "Brookfield" comes from two early residents who named their township after their farmsteads near Brookville (now Brockenhurst) on both sides of the M8 motorway: John Brooks Sr., who settled in 1847; his son-in-law Jacob Leach settled there about 1872.[3] In 1871 William Fenton became one of three men licensed to practice law in Illinois under territorial law,[4][5] but he never established himself here because he did not own land within what are now Brookfield Township or Kane County. He did establish a practice on Beltline Road southwest of town before moving his office downtown about 1895 when Kansas City's new courthouse was completed nearby. A year later Abraham Lincoln visited this part of Illinois while campaigning for election as president and pronounced it “the most improved [city] I have ever seen”;[6][7][8] shortly thereafter Fenton donated land east of town along what is now State Street (later renamed Central Avenue) to establish Park Hill Cemetery which still occupies that location today. Fenton died suddenly young without any children so his wife Sarah took over his business interests here until her death around 1902; then David Hutton purchased her interest and continued expanding it until 1938 when he sold it all to Harry Sanger who organized Chicago's first commercial real estate firm - First National Bank & Trust Company.[9][10][11][12][13][/pagebreak][/section], eventually becoming one of America's largest real estate developers with more than 60 companies operating throughout Chicagoland during those years including many located outside Chicago limits such as Sangerstown (now Lombard).[14],[15],[16] From 1914 through 1916 Sanger served concurrently as Mayor pro tempore of Chicago – one term after being elected at-large on April 6th 1915 following indictments brought against him by federal officials alleging graft at several local businesses connected with World War I veteran newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer III over editorials critical of war policies – an event considered watershed for American political life although no charges were ever filed against him personally.* [*Sanger would be convicted seven times between 1917-1922 on felony bribery charges stemming from activities related to various real estate investment deals*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Sanger# Conviction_history)). After hostilities ended1945 many factories closed back up except for Wabash Paper Products which moved out completely after producing paper exclusively since 1951† [*Wabash Paper Products would go bankrupt in 1984]; grain mills ceased operation around 1950† [*All these mills closed down because they could not compete with cheaper materials coming out OF CONNECTION WITH THE WAR THAT OCCURRED]; last company remaining open was Alcoa aluminum smelting plant which operated from 1949 until its closure in 2006(*Alcoa would go bankrupt eight times between 1938-2006)).

Brookfield, Illinois was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,100 at the 2010 census. Brookfield is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Brookfield was organized on October 4, 1854, from parts of Hinsdale anducker townships. It became a city on December 14, 1924. On November 8, 1936, the city charter was amended to allow for the annexation of portions of neighboring unincorporated communities of Palatine and Westchester to form a new city with a population of 25,000 people—the first such addition to Chicago since its incorporation as an independent municipality in 1847. Brookfield's history dates back to when it was one of several small villages in Cook County that were organized during the mid-19th century as part of what would become known as "The Great Migration." Many farm families who had come overland from New England left their homes and businesses in Illinois during this time frame and soon found themselves scattered throughout Cook County. Among these settlers were those from Brookfield Manor which later became part of Palatine. In 1855–56 two men by the name of Green and Goodstein developed land east of present day Palatine Road (now US-41) northward along what is now Kedzie Avenue within what is now Brookfield Village boundaries; they named their land after George Washington Green (1763-1848), one half brotherof General James Dearborn (1795-1865), Commander in Chief Ulysses S. Grant's uncle and namesake for Dearborn Heights near Chicago where Grant grew up before becoming President Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary Of War under Andrew Johnson – an event which helped make Chicago one of America's largest cities at that time! The early years were difficult for the fledgling community due largely to lack thereof infrastructure including water supplies or any type transportation options other than horse drawn buggies between village sites orChicago itself! Nevertheless through perseverance and hard work over many years things began to change with rapid growth in population starting around 1900 thanks primarily to two factors: railroad development westward through Cook County towards Joliet & South Bend/Plymouth & Batavia Counties Agricultural lands lay fallow due to high prices being charged for lumber required for construction; also immigrants began moving into rural areas looking for better economic opportunities which opened up whole blocks formerly used mainly by farmers adjacent industrial neighborhoods acrossSouth Side streets today’s Western Addition neighborhood are direct descendants some Olmstedian planners called “ zoning districts” led by John Berenson who designed much current Cityscape right here
