The name "Brookfield" comes from two forks of the Kankakee River: one near present day Brookfield and another near where the village of Arlington now stands. The first settlement in what is now Brookfield was made by chance when some farmers were plowing their land and noticed there were several large trees on their property that had not been cut down by previous owners. They named their new community after one of these trees - Brookfield Village. In 1836, Captain James Kappenheimer established an adobe fort at Whatcom Creek as part of a military expedition against the Kickapoo Indians. He naming his new town Kappenheim after his home state of Germany. Afterward, various other German immigrants moved to this area including Johann Friedrich Schneider (1792-1868), who founded Schneider's Mills; John Deutschmann (1807-1886), who founded Deutschmann’s grocery store chain; August Heinrich Schwartz (1820-1902), who made charcoal from black oak leaves for heating purposes; Julius Sondergaard(1824-1912), founder of Sondergaard’s bakery & cafe; George Muhlenberg (1800-1864) and Nicholas Nicklas Muhlenberg(1785-1866) founded Grosse Pointe Lumber Company which built sawmills, grain elevators and other mills in Cook County until it merged with Jardine Hogg Iron Works in 1917 to form International Harvester Corporation In 1837, Amos Butterbaugh settled on a farm west of present day Brookfield along Big Branch Creek which he called Butterbaugh's Station or simply "Butterbaugh." By 1841 buttermilk was being produced at this site by three men – Daniel Drake, Abraham Van Deusen and Solomon Waterman – all later known as buttermen because they ran a dairy business hereabouts. That same year also saw another important event when the first steamboat arrived at what is now Milwaukee Avenue downtown from Galena Heights on Lake Michigan loaded with saltpeter for use as fertiliser for crops – thus becoming possible transportation about central Illinois without having to go through vaults or watercourses
