Brookfield is a city in Hancock County, Illinois, United States. The population was 29,521 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Hancock County and the second-largest city in Illinois after Chicago. Brookfield is adjacent to the towns of East Stroudsburg, Altoona, and Clearwater on its eastern edge and to the villages of Arlington Heights and Villa Park on its northwestern edge. The first people to live in what is now Brookfield were Native Americans known as the Chippewa. They hunted game near what is now downtown Brookfield until 1820 when they were displaced by settlers from Michigan. The first white person to settle in Brookfield was James Kapp, who arrived around 1825 with his family. At that time there were only a few hundred residents living in this area. Downtown Brookfield began to grow slowly due to disputes over land ownership among various families until it became an incorporated town in 1876. In 1907 two brothers named George Wirth founded Wirth Paper Company which soon became one of America's leading paper companies. In 1916 their daughter Alice married John Quinn (1887–1967), one of America's most successful businessmen and CEOs during World War II for General Electric (GE). After World War II ended Alice Quinn committed suicide by jumping from a window of her home into Niagara Falls because she could not bear living without her father's support system after he lost his wealth during the war years.. Brookfield is a town in the U.S. state of Illinois, located about 17 miles (27 kilometers) west of Chicago. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,826. Brookfield is part of the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Chicago–Midway City-Hinsdale Combined Statistical Area. The first settlement in what would become Brookfield was made on a farmstead called "Greenside" by John Greenspun and his family in 1836. Brookfield began as a small village named after one of its founders, Elias Broome, when he organized an agricultural society in 1847. In 1870, it became an incorporated town under the name of Greenville Township; but it reverted to its original name two years later because it had been suggested that "Brookfield" sounded too similar to Brooklyn Heights on Long Island (then part of New York). The townsite at present day was laid out from land given to him by Solomon Sacks as part of his purchase from Aaron Burr for $3,500 cash and 10 acres (4 hectares) of woodland. The first church built in Brookfield was erected on Wacker Drive in 1852; and soon afterwards there were also schools and a post office here. By 1860, brookfield had about 100 residents; but by 1890 its population had swollen to 3200 people with 248 businesses inside the limits chartered by the townsite government that year – more than any other community within town limits! During Prohibition (1918–1920), many farms around here produced liquor for sale during this time; but since prohibition ended finally four years later, most all these farms have since closed down or are now used for other purposes such as housing or agriculture again! In recent years some efforts have been made to preserve important aspects of Brookfield's history like pioneer homes which still stand today or even build new ones! One such effort is called "The Park", which will be located just outside town limits near SR 190 so that everyone can enjoy nature without having to leave their homes!
From 1812 to 1815, the town of Brookfield was part of the Illinois Territory. In 1816, it became a village. On March 4, 1860, Brookfield was incorporated as a city.
