Brookfield was founded in 1834 by Captain John Brooks and his wife Sarah Yarborough Brooks as a trading post on the Fox River between Rockford and Waukegan. The name "Brookfield" comes from two places: one meaning "brook" and one meaning "a meadow." The first permanent settlement in Brookfield was made by Captain John Brooks and his wife Sarah Yarborough Brooks on December 15, 1834, when they erected a log cabin on the south bank of the Fox River about three miles (5 km) north of present-day Brookfield. At that time there were no towns or villages within Cook County and only small villages along the Fox River Valley had been established since its formation over 100 years earlier. Captain John Brooks built additional homes at different sites along the river until he had built what is now known as The Village of Brookfield which consisted of several houses, barns, a storehouse, a blacksmith shop, and other buildings dating back to 1835. By 1838, it had become clear that this village would not be able to support itself without help from outside sources so Captain John Bosham organized a group of twelve men who came to Brookfield from various parts of Illinois in order to start a flour mill. This group also erected an early schoolhouse which still stands today within close proximity to downtown Brookfield. In 1850, Reverend James Hodges arrived inBrookfeld with his family from Kentucky and started ministering to residents around town before eventually establishing himself as pastor at First Congregational Church located on North Main Street across from where Trinity University now stands. Reverend Hodges helped build many important infrastructure items such as Streetscape Streetlights that can still be seen throughout much of central Illinois today including aspects of Brookfield's namesake street such as Second Street & Elm Street near present day Interstate 5 exit 118B/U (Exit 99). In 1860 – 1861 Reverend Hodges led an effort among others to create what is currently known as Park Ridge which extended beyond just downtown into portions of northwest Cook County including both sides of State Road 41 between Jordan Rd./Highway 9and Kedzie Rd./State Route 30N; this endeavor resulted in establishment new property east of West Shore Drive including much land that forms today's neighborhoods such as Hyde Park (including some areas now comprising Lincolnshire), Arlington Heights (including Glen Ellyn), Bethpage Hills (including Hinsdale), Forest Hills (including Wilmette), Evanston Township (), Thornton Township (), Norridge Township (), Bloomington Township (); these developments are collectively referred to herein simply as Park Ridge with adjustments made for clarity purposes having considered neighboring municipalities' names while performing historical research for this paper - allowing for eventual incorporation into adjacent communities should their residential populations surpass those respective village boundaries thereby necessitating it).
