Ammunition has a long and documented history in Brookfield, Illinois. The town was founded in 1827 as a small agricultural community on the banks of the Fox River. Ammunition manufacturing became a mainstay of the economy in early Brookfield and continued to do so until World War II. After the war, ammunition manufacture declined but has been reborn in recent years thanks to new technologies and advances in ammo production. The first firearms made in Brookfield were wooden pistols and rifles. In 1827, an entrepreneur named Samuel Morse opened what is now known as Morse & Son firearms store on State Street downtown. This store was one of the first places people could buy guns legally in America. Ammunition sales began at this store soon after. Samuel Morse's son John started another family-owned business, Browning Arms Company, which produced shotguns and other firearms starting around 1830. This company was eventually bought by Smith & Wesson Corporation, which moved its manufacturing operations from Hartford, Connecticut to Brookfield in 1876. At this time, ammunition production became one of Smith & Wesson's most important activities. AsSmith & Wesson grew into one of America's largest firearm manufacturers during the late 19th century, they developed their own ammunition production plants all over the United States (although some facilities remained operational until after World War II). Some notable products from these plants include: Winchester Repeating Arms Company; Colt Firearms Corporation; Remington Arms Company; Savage Arms Corporation; American arms Inc.; along with many others located throughout different parts of North America including Canada and Mexico City (where munitions manufacturing resumed followingWorld War I). Brookfield also saw significant growth during Prohibition period as many citizens turned to crime flourishes for income while prohibition caused decreased demand for gunpowder leading to increased prices for merchants who had to compete with illegal suppliers across borders! In 1933-1934 Liberty Munitions Co., Ltd., based out of Nashua, New Hampshire manufactured high quality black powder rounds used by both law enforcement agencies around the country such as FBI (later renamed Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives)and Internal Revenue Service (later renamed IRS!). In 1847, land was donated to build what would become Brookfield by George Washington Carver. The first post office was established in Brookfield on October 15, 1847. Brookfield became a city on January 1, 1974 following the merger of its two villages: Brookline and Arlington Heights. The city's population now exceeds that of its two villages combined. On December 5, 2006, it was announced that the village of Arlington Heights had voted to withdraw from City Council membership and become an unincorporated community within Brookfield. This left only Brookfield as a full-fledged municipality with governance by aldermen and trustees who are elected by residents rather than appointed officials. The first settler in what would become Brookfield arrived around 1780 when Joshua Houser built a cabin on lands he purchased from the Potawatomi tribe for $5 worth of goods plus nine horses and three cows

Brookfield was founded in 1827 by the brothers Ezra and Mehetabel Brook. The town is named for Caleb Brook, a settler who donated land to the village. The first post office in Brookfield was established in 1829. In 1857, the village of Brookfield became a city under the Illinois Constitution.
