In 1984–85, due to budgetary constraints within McLean County government, all but fourElementary Schools were closed throughout Mclean County during K-12th grades; however five elementary schools reopened after receiving money fromoutside sources (including private donations). In 1916, Florence Ladd became the first black person to be elected to public office when she won her seat on the Kane County Board of Education. She remains one of only two women ever to have held such an appointment in Illinois (the other being Jane Addams). In 1971, Ted Kennedy announced his candidacy for president and he eventually won with 50% of the vote against incumbent Richard Nixon. As senator from Massachusetts during that time, Kennedy played a major role in pushing through important social welfare reform laws including Medicare and Medicaid expansion opportunities for Americans without health insurance who needed them most. One such law saw passage after he helped create legislation increasing funding for Planned Parenthood Federation of America due to concerns about what would happen if Roe v Wade were overturned by another decisionnullifying abortion rights across all fifty states combined!
