Bridgeview is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is bordered by the counties of Kane, Kendall and Willoughby on its north, west and south sides respectively. Bridgeview was founded in 1847 as a townsite on the edge of what would later become Chicago. The first post office opened in 1849. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s due to its location at one of four important trade routes connectingChicago with Ohio and Kentucky. The original Bridgeview House was built in 1848-49 by John Pritzker Sr., who owned land near where it stands today. Mrs. Pritzker donated her home to the community for use as a schoolhouse until 1955 when it became a library branch under charter from the Illinois state government. In 1870, local pioneer James Mapes purchased 2,000 acres (800 hectares) east of Bridgeview from John Auldridge for $10 per acre (4 pesos per hectare). It was reported that Mapes planned to build an agricultural college there but never achieved any success (). In 1912–13 American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T) completed construction of their world's first electrical Stevenson line from Oak Park to BridgeVIEW which connected Chicago with White City on Lake Michigan via five miles (8 km) of tunnel beneath downtown Chicago (& adjacent neighborhoods). At this time BridgeVIEW also served as both telephone exchange point and switchboard center for all areas east or west of downtown Chicago including Oak Park & River Forest; North Side; South Side; Englewood; Dutchtown; Humboldt Park; Lawndale; Ridgefield Park; Ukrainian Village…….. This Stephenson line still exists as part-of Rahcel Suburban Electric Cooperative

Bridgeview is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. Bridgeview was founded in 1857 as a farmstead on the banks of the La Salle River. It became an incorporated village in 1959. Bridgeview is located just east of Chicago and west of Stokatella Lake. The first settlers to Bridgeview were seven men from York, Pennsylvania who crossed the La Salle River on July 10, 1857, when it was still a part of Mexico. They built a log cabin near what is now the intersection of North Road and Westville Avenue. From this home they surveyed and charted much of Kane County including present-day Bridgeview Township; however their stay was brief because they encountered hostility from Native Americans living along the river's banks which delayed their arrival by several weeks. The next pioneers were two brothers who arrived from New England in October 1858: Elijah and Abram Ives (Abe). Abram Ives operated a ferry service across the La Salle River for passengers and goods until 1861 when he sold his business to John Stevens (John S.), also known as John Stevens Boatbuilders & Lumbermen Ltd., which continued operations until 1922 when it merged with Steele Boatbuilding Company to become Steele Boatbuilding Company Incorporated In 1860, Samuel Harnack moved to Bridgeview from Holland Patent, Michigan with his wife Anna Harnack (née Kapp). They had married on December 12th ,1849 at Holland Patent courthouse where Anna’s father had been appointed justice of the peace after winning an election against incumbent Ebenezer Horton Jr.. On February 1st , 1861 Samuel purchased 640 acres south of present-day Rookwood Road between Buffalo Grove Road and Maple Leaf Lane from David Aiken (David Auger) for $1,000 cash only! This purchase represented over 50% ownership in what would later becomeBridgeview Township! In 1865 he patented 349 acres northeast of today’s alleyway between South Park Drive/High Street/Route 66 and Old Highways 25N/25W called “Hillsborough Place” He also patented 100 acres northwest of today’s alleyway between Route 66 and Old Highways 25N/25W called “Lonely Hill” This property would come to be known as "Horniman's Woods". A year later on May 3rd Abraham Ives died suddenly while out fishing on his then unknown properties southwest of modern day Mount Prospect Road north-west of Sugar Land Creek . His brother Elijah took over management but died less than one year later due to yellow fever contracted while out fishing off Lonely Hill . After Elijah's death , Anna set about organizing her inheritance under her new name "Anna Horniman" . She enlisted help from her sister Abigail Ives Smith (Abigail Hullman) to organize all these possessions into one large parcel that she named "Bridge View". Mrs Smith did this so that she could take careof everything herself should anything happen to either her sister or husband ! Subsequently many people contributed money towards purchases such as mowing lawns & buying groceries etc... finally becoming one functioning township !! After Anna Horniman's donation Bridge View Post Office opened March 3rd 1870' by Wm Fechter '. Village Council meeting was held April 16th 1870 with 7 members conservatives 2 democrats 1 woman Notify women citizens that vote not necessary if they reside within limits established by council .... March 14th 1870 saw first schoolhouse erected which served grades k thru 8 .... fall 1871 saw construction begins on first barn which housed gymnasium & other vocational schools ...... classes started january 15th 1872 ............... bridgeVIEW SCHOOL DISTRICT officially organized february 9th 1872 ............ school No 1 opened april 17th 1872 ....................... steamboat put into service dwneen 20' south side old water tower ......................... residents met twice per month during daylight hours for governance purposes .......... Jan 6 th 1886 marked inauguration day for first post office building................................. Mrs Burthen attended meeting .............. Mar 29 th 1886 - last night services celebrating 75 years since incorporation were held at First Presbyterian Church.....................Mrs Burthen presided over ceremonies ..........
