Bridgeview is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Bridgeview is located on the western edge of Cook County and is bordered by Calumet City to the north, Harvey to the east, Oak Lawn to the south, and River Forest to the west. The town was founded in 1871 as a result of a merger of two other communities: Arlington Heights and Bridgeview Heights. At its peak in 1920, Bridgeview had a population of 2,500 people; however, this number decreased rapidly due to various factors including World War I and Prohibition. In 2000, Bridgeview merged with neighboring Calumet City which had a population of over 8,000 people at that time. The merger caused some controversy because both communities are relatively rural and have different demographics (Calumet City has more high-income residents than Bridgeview). However, overall it has been successful in merging with another community without affecting its character or economy significantly. Bridgeview experiences significant heat wave issues each summer due to its close proximity to Chicago’s hot weather areas. Bridgeview was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is located on the border of Will and Rockford counties. The population was 1,975 at the 2010 census. Bridgeview is one of three villages in the community of West Dundee, which also includes East Dundee and Peoria. Bridgeview was founded by Dutch immigrants in 1836 as a small farming community between what are now Rockford and Will counties. The first post office opened in 1837. In 1846, Bridgeview became part of the new town of West Dundee when that municipality were established along the Mississippi River south of Chicago. On November 5, 1892, Bridgeview voters approved a proposed annexation to the larger village of West Dundee due to its proximity to job opportunities in Chicago and its lack of opposition from residents there. On May 15, 1893, Bridgeview became an incorporated Village under Illinois law No. 9956-93 (the "Village Act"). The village had a population of 653 at the 2000 census; it had grown to 1,975 by 2010 when counted within the boundaries of West Dundee Township (of which it is a part). Bridgeview was founded in 1837 by Jonas S. Bridge and his wife, Rebecca. The first bridge over the Illinois River was built in 1837, and it connected what is now Bridgeview with a small community on the other side. In 1841, Jonas S. Bridge purchased land east of the current site of Bridgeview and began to build a new town, which he named after himself, Bridgeview Heights. The town grew rapidly and by 1850 had a population of 515 people. By 1870, the town had become an incorporated municipality with a population of 3,858 people. In 1898, the city of Chicago annexed much of southern Illinois to form its new metropolitan area. As part of this annexation process, Chicago agreed to annex Bridgeview Heights as well as several other municipalities in southern Illinois that were not within the newly formed city limits. As a result of this annexation process, many residents from northern Illinois relocated to Bridgeview Heights in order to continue their childhood experiences there. BridgeVIEW HILLS!
