Bridgeview is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 51,391 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in the Chicago metropolitan area and one of the largest cities in Illinois. Bridgeview was founded on May 4, 1847 by Fayetteville Township trustees John Halsey and Nathaniel Lyon as a town on the south side of the South Side Canal. It became a village on October 20, 1892. On March 15, 1907, Bridgeview became an incorporated city. The City of Bridgeview merged with its neighboring towns of Skokie to form the current City of Chicago on December 1, 1998. The first settlers in what would become Bridgeview were farmers who arrived from Maryland during1834-35 under contract from James Kappler of that state's Potomac River Valley settlement (now Arlington Heights). Kappler had come to America as part of his brother George's party and landed at Otter Creek near modern-day Mokena about December 8, 1834. Bridgeview is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,812 at the 2010 census. Bridgeview is composed of two wards: the City of Bridgeview and the Village of Glen Ellyn. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was founded by Rev. John Mott in 1873 as a small community on the banks of the Des Plaines River between Glen Ellyn and Beech Grove Park. In 1881, it was consolidated with Bridgeview and became an incorporated municipality with a population of 12,387 in 1907. The name has been changed several times over its history, but always retains its civic character as a unincorporated hamlet within Cook County until 1978 when it became an official city with full powers to regulate its own affairs under state law after being approved through referendum by its citizens. Bridgeview's rich maritime history began before European settlement when Native Americans used this area for fishing and trading purposes from pre-historic times up until about 1500 AD according to oral tradition told by Ojibwe/Mnemonics creator Black Elk himself. The first Europeans to visit this region were French voyageurs who named it "Bridgewater" after their ship "Le Brâtiment de Bridgwater". A plaque on Route 66 near Highland Park commemorates this event which also happens to be one mile east of what is now Glen Ellyn's border with BridgeVIEW creek flows into Cook Lake from which Falls Township takes its name; so that Falls Township may have originated as either part of or related to “the old village” called Bridgewater south of present day I-88 Golden Horseshoe Boulevard).
