Bridgeview is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,899 at the 2010 census. Bridgeview is located on the east bank of the Chicago River. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Bridgeview was founded by Ulysses S. Grant and his wife Julia Pemberton Grant on November 3, 1847 as a part of the new Town of Jacksonville Township on the south side of Chicago. The Grants were among the first white settlers in what would become Bridgeview. The town was named for Ira M. Bridge, an American Civil War veteran and member of the Illinois House of Representatives from Jacksonville Township (now Kane County). Ira M. Bridge worked as a road surveyor for John Ahearn & Company in Downers Grove and also donated land to build what would later be known as Parkland Cemetery; this cemetery opened in 1851. In 1857, George Pullen bought 1/4 mile (0 km) of land northwest of present-day Bridgeview from Silas Weir Mitchell for $25 per acre ($ today). Pullen had been appointed captain general and inspector general for Indian Creek District by President James Kahl during his term in office as commander-in-chief (1853–55). He built a sawmill there which became one of the largest employers in town until it closed its doors around 1906 due to financial problems brought on by World War I; since then, much smaller mills have operated within walking distance or less than 2 miles away from Bridgeview's downtown business district (). "Pullen Prairie" now includes almost all that was once part of Pullen's mill property: two access roads leading northward out of town off State Route 53 near its junction with Interstate 77; three homes still stand associated with Pullen Prairie: one dating back to about 1840 and presently stands at 655 N State Route 53; another date back to about 1860 has been moved closer to Interstate 79 just east Of Highway 52 near Jeraldine Middle School; four more homes have evidently been torn down but remain standing inside "Pullen Prairie" boundary - these are: three dating back to before 1920 - one still standing at 514 N State route 53 next door to where Jeraldine Middle School now stands; two others that were originally structures on farmsteads situated within "Pullen Prairie", but have since been destroyed or moved elsewhere within "Pullen Prairie". One such structure currently remains northeast corner lot 6th St NW corner Wagon Wheel Rd between 4th Ave NE and 5th Ave NE." In 1901 George Pullen sold additional 1/4 mile (0 km) westward along current day Milwaukee Avenue from Childress Avenue towards Joliet Heights Road for $50 per acre ($ today). This sale made possible what later became known as Northwestern Mutual Fieldhouse complex - home stadium for both American Basketball League teams Northwestern Indiana Wildcats (1926–27), National Football League team Bears (1934), NFL team Packers (1939), IL Lakers (1967) - which included several other businesses including restaurants, night clubs and movie theaters., including Regal Cinemas Drive-In Theater across street from field house used by Bear football games throughout their history.) After World War II pulled many small businesses out OF town into suburbs like Streamwood or Wheaton while larger ones relocated closer to Loop 7 mainline highway
The bridge over the Mississippi River was built in 1853. The original bridge had a toll of five dollars. In 1875, the toll was increased to ten dollars. The toll was abolished in 1911.
