Bridgeview is named after Captain John Bridge who led an American Expedition against the Native Americans in 1812. The first settler in what would become Bridgeview was James Auld who came to the area in 1838. He and his family developed a small farm near present day Lawnwood Drive and Prospect Park Road. In 1847, Samuel Sibley built a house on what is now south lawn of City Hall which became known as "Sibley's Grove." The first post office was established at Bridgeview on October 24, 1849 by Captive John Fenton with the name "Fentonville." In 1865, Phebe Jane Hitchcock moved to Bridgeview from Galesburg and started an academy for girls which still operates today under the name Jane Addams Academy of Learning. In 1907, Edwin Leland bought 240 acres (100 ha) of land east of town from Jethro Gibbs and donated it to the city for use as parkland. This property would later become known as Lake View Terrace. In 1915-16 when World War I began America produced many soldiers serving in Europe so Mayor Harry Sinclair called for local men to volunteers and form companies that could furnish their own uniforms instead of requisitioned uniforms from abroad. Forty-eight men volunteered and became members of BridgeVIEW Ambulance Company No 1 which served during World War I providing ambulance service between Hammondsport (now Danzig) and Chicago Heights military hospitals until its disbanding on December 3, 1919 due to lack of volunteers or equipment; this company also fought at Ingeborg Heights on November 8th 1918 .This p
Bridgeview is a city in the Kane County, Illinois, United States. It is the seat of Kane County government. The population was 43,824 at the 2010 census. Bridgeview is located east of Chicago on I-90 and north of Rockford on the Fox River. The town was platted in 1847 by John Buhl as part of a larger area that included present-day Lombard and Park Ridge. The name "Bridgeview" was first applied to the town by David Dudley after he saw an early notice in a local newspaper for a sale of lots along the Fox River. In 1872, some residents of Lombard petitioned for village status because they did not feel comfortable living next to Chicago (then known as the "City of Steel"). On July 20, 1872, Bridgeview became a village with its own police department and school district. In 1896 it merged with Lombard to form what is today Bridgeview Heights Borough. In 1951, bridge construction began on I-90 which would later become Illinois's longest highway project; this led to increased development in nearby communities such as Lombard and Park Ridge which helped contribute to Bridgeview's growth over time. In 1966, when Interstate 95 was completed through Kane County, BridgeVIEW became one of its original counties within Illinois' newly formed state system; it has since continued to grow although still very small relative to other counties within Illinois' system.
