Bridgeview is a city in Rockford County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,898 at the 2010 census. Bridgeview is the second most populous city in Rockford County after Chicago. It is also one of the fastest-growing cities in Illinois. Bridgeview was founded by Elisha Jewett and his family on May 10, 1847 as a small town on the east bank of the Fox River between Chicagoland and Decatur Township. The original plat for Bridgeview included only a few acres of land; however, within two years of its founding, Jews from Chicago had moved to Bridgeview and formed a community called Hebrew Reformed Congregation which still exists today. By 1860, Bridgeview had reached its current size with over 50 dwellings and 15 businesses including six grocery stores and three dry goods stores. On November 14th that year residents voted to change their name to BridgeVIEW to commemorate President Abraham Lincoln’s visit to that area just four days earlier. At that time it was one of only two Ulysses S. Grant hometowns in Illinois (the other being Bloomington). BridgeVIEW became home to both American Watch Company (later Wernher von Braun's company) and General Electric Company during their early years in business respectively – this was significant because these companies would later become world-famous due to their contributions to America's technological revolution during World War II. In 1865 local school Superintendent Moses Levy donated land adjacent to Central Schoolhouse for construction of what would become East High School which opened September 6th, 1867; this event helped establish BridgeVIEW as an important educational center for Rockford County while downtown Chicagoland continued its growth spurt). The first store in BridgeVIEW operated out of a old stable located on North Main Street between First Avenue and Second Street until 1861 when David Eisenhart opened the first self-service convenience store in America at 4500 N Milwaukee Ave., now known as Sears Tower across from IMAX Theatre! Additionally during this time period several new industries began moving into or expanding into BridgeVIEW such as photography (John Fritchey started his own photographic studio here) automotive manufacturing (American Motors Corporation built their first car dealership here), appliance production (Foster & Hawley produced radios here), printing press production (Erickson Bros./Donaldson Printers established shop here), shipbuilding (Navy Yard built USS "Illinois" here) – all while downtown Chicagolyn continued growing more complex with brick buildings becoming trendy among elites throughout Midwest Europe! By 1930 bridge VIEW contained over 200 businesses employing over 2200 people! This rapid growth did not stop there though; by 1960 bridge VIEW contained over 100 schools employing nearly 3000 educators!!! Today many business owners continueto operate their enterprises out of homes or smaller offices located within walking distance or less than 5 miles from their workshops/jobsites/markets/ airports etc…. This demonstrates how rapidly innovation can occur within any given region no matter how traditional society may have been historically constructed!
Bridgeview was founded in 1820 by Captain Joshua Barney and his wife Margaret. The first permanent settler in the area was Nicholas Fenton, who arrived in 1825. The town gradually grew around this period, with many new homes being built on the current site of Bridgeview. In 1854, Bridgeview became a village and was renamed after General James K. Polk. The name change reflected the rapidly growing town and its importance as a transportation hub for local farmers and travelers. In 1915, Bridgeview was merged into the larger city of Chicago; however, it still retains its own governing body and continues to be an important cultural center within the city.
