The first mention of ammunition production in Bridgeview comes from 1851, when Amos Adams built a sawmill on the riverbank nearpresent-day Route 21. At that time, ammo was produced primarily for shot firers and shotguns. In 1875, Daniel Freeman bought land around present-day Route 21 and began producing rifle cartridges called “Fenwick Arms”. The company later changed its name to “Atkins & Company” and continued to produce rifle cartridges until 1902. During World War II, Atkins & Company produced 100 million rounds of ammunition for the U.S.—more than any other company in Illinois—and supplied weapons to both Allied and Axis forces. After the war, Atkins & Company merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester) to form what is now known as Winchester corporation. After college, he worked as an economist for Bear Stearns before becoming president of ABC World News Corporation (ABC), one of the largest television networks in the world. He served two terms before retiring at age 77 after leading ABC through some difficult times including financial reform and Hurricane Katrina aftermath. Bridgeview has had several mayors over the years – all but one were men: JOE BONNINI (1946-1960), CHARLES DICKERSON (1964-1970), JOHN DENISON (1974-1980), EDWARD KEEGAN JR.(1982-1990) AND DAVID PLATZER (1996-2002). The most recent mayor is RICHARD MALONEY who was elected on November 3rd, 2016

Bridgeview began as a small farming community on the southern edge of what is now Bridgeview Heights. The first settlers were farmers who bought land from the Kankakee nation in 1836 and laid out an agricultural township called Elmira Township on March 6, 1837. In 1847, Elmira Township was divided into two townships: North Bridgeview and South Bridgeview. North BridgeVIEW became home to the town's industry and commerce while South BridgeVIEW became known for its farms and hunting lands. The village of Bridgeview was founded in 1898 when it was merged with neighboring Addison Township to form Addison-Bridgeview Township which then merged with Cook County in 1920. In 1960, all but one of Cook County's rural municipalities were consolidated into Mapleton-Addison Township which then merged with Danville to become Danville-BridgeVIEW Village. bridge view il history
