It grew rapidly due to its strategic location as a transportation hub on the north-south Chicago–Milwaukee railway corridor. By 1895, Bridgeview had 5 stores and 30 homes. In 1902, an oil well was drilled in nearby Clear Lake and production began bringing new life to the town. During World War II, Bridgeview became one of the most heavily bombed areas in America with almost all of its buildings damaged or destroyed; however no loss of life occurred within the town itself. After the war ended, many businesses closed down but some continued to operate until they were forced out by competition from other towns in McLean County. Many residents chose to move away during this time as well because of changing social mores and economic conditions throughout much of America.; However a few people decided to stay and start new businesses including several garment manufacturers which continue today as part of ILWU Local 897 bargaining unit for manufacturing workers statewide
The first European settlement in Illinois was on the Sangamon River in 1787. The area that is now Bridgeview was part of the Northwest Territory, which was organized by the United States in 1785. In 1815, the area became part of Indiana and then Illinois. The first post office in Bridgeview was established in 1816. In 1847, the town became a village and it remained so until 1951 when it became a city.
