Bradley is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,693 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County and home to the University of Bradley. The town was platted on February 22, 1854 by George H. Bradley and David J. Hodges as part of the Chicago-Naperville Township subdivision of North Side Township. On December 1, 1857, it was organized as a village under the name of "Plymouth". Plymouth's first post office was established on November 15, 1859. In 1865, Plymouth incorporated as a city with a population of 25 residents; however its charter amendment revoked this designation two years later because of financial difficulties. The city's charter granted its citizens voting rights in municipal government and fire protection from township officials; however these rights were not always exercised due to budget shortfalls or political opposition from townspeople who saw Plymouth as an additional tax burdensome municipality rather than a beneficial economic development entity for their community. In 1895, Bradley became an agricultural center with over 60 farms grown crops such as corn (1893), soybeans (1903), potatoes (1905), peas (1915), cottonseed oil (1920s–30s) and other products; also located nearby were factories making bicycle parts and hatschet blades; among others being Jennie Armour Manufacturing Company founded in 1903 which manufactured bicycles until 1975; Singer Sewing Machine Corporation established in 1906 which made lace machines until 1984 before going into bankruptcy in 1991; Cement Works Corporation established in 1928 which produced Portland Cement until 1951 when it became known as Illinois Cement Company Incorporated In 1941 Illinois Power & Light Company built one of the first power plants west of the Mississippi River – now called The Gales Building – across main street from Bradley’s old post office building One reason for increased industry during World War II was strategic: With ample amounts of coal available from underground mines near Drakeville and Peoria IL allied forces could build munitions plants without having to bring coal upriver where transportation would be more difficult After World War II there were several waves of migration to Bradley starting around 1950 with farmers moving back into villages after getting out OFWs during Korea while other families left for various reasons including jobs opportunities or Removal Order created by Japan following their surrender In 1957 City Council set up Planning Board consisting 5 members 3 men only 2 women who served until 1978 when council disbanded board forming Planning Department instead
Bradley was founded by John Bradley in 1836. It became a city in 1859, and it was organized as a township on November 3, 1856. On January 1, 1915, Bradley was annexed by the City of Chicago.
