Bradley is a small town in Illinois, United States. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gary, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bradley was founded in 1867 by George and Sarah Bradley as a farmer's community on the east side of the river near present day Westville. The first post office in Bradley opened in 1881 and closed in 1901. In 1907, Bradley had a school (later known as Bradley High School), which closed in 1961. The first grocery store opened in Bradley in 1928 and served until 1973 when it merged with another local grocer to form one-stop shopping center called Village Grocery & Supermarket Inc.. In 2006, Village Grocery & Supermarket became an independent company again under the name of Bradley Plaza Market Place Inc.. In 2009, former Mayor Rick Gephardt announced his plans to sell off all but 2 acres of land adjacent to his home for development into an artificial lakefront village that would include housing, a golf course, health club and retail stores. As of 2016 there have been no developments announced or permits filed yet for this project which would span over 10 miles from town limits into Gary Township. Bradley has two high schools - Brandon Road High School and Prairie View A&M High School - which serve students grades 9 through 12; three middle schools - Central Valley Middle School (grades 7-8), Northwest Middle School (grades 6-7) and Southwest Middle School (grades 5-6) ; one elementary school - Midwest Elementary School (grades PreK-3)

Bradley was a small town in the southern Illinois area of the U.S. state of Illinois before it was absorbed into Chicago in 1871. Bradley is named after Samuel Bradley, an early settler and landowner. The first white person to live in Bradley was John Pemberton, who arrived in 1824. He built a cabin on the west bank of the river which he named "Pemberton's Prairie." In 1830, Pemberton married Anna Buell, daughter of Nicholas Buell, one of the original settlers in what is now Chicago. She came from a family that had been living near Peoria, Illinois for several generations. In 1831, Anna and her husband moved their family to what is now Bradley along with other pioneers including their three children: Samuel (1832-1902), Jane (1833-1900), and Everett (1835-1911). They were among the first people to settle in what is now Chicago. soon after they arrived they started trading goods with Native Americans and helping to build up Chicago's infrastructure such as roadways and boats. In addition to his wife and two daughters he also founded a flour mill at present day costello Street and operated it until 1865 when it closed due to lack of customers; this mill remains an historic landmark today under private ownership.
