The name Bradley was derived from "brad" meaning "a tree with fruit", which was given to Pemberton by his father-in-law, James Fenton. In 1853, James Auld purchase land here from Pemberton for $5 per acre ($100 today). A post office called Bradley was established in 1857, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. Bradley became a village on December 15th 1888 when it incorporated as an unincorporated community under the name of "Village of Bradley". On May 6th 1912, Village of Bradley merged into the city of Joliet with a population reported at 2,500 residents; however this number may have been inflated due to wartime propaganda purposes or because there were no records to support it! The current town hall building dates back to 1924 when it replaced an earlier structure that burned down during the Great Depression era. The original building had capacity for only 150 people and served as a schoolhouse before being renovated into its current form over time.
