Bradley is a small town in McDonough County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1871 by John and Sarah Bradley. The first post office at Bradley was established in 1872. The population of Bradley was 1,867 at the 2000 census. The village of Bradley was platted in 1871 by John and Sarah Bradley. They named it for their son-in-law, George Haines (1824-1911). In 1889, the village had a population of 1,700 people and it grew to 3,000 by 1910. In 1906, the village voted to create a public school system. The first high school opened in 1912 and the first elementary school in 1916. In 1865, Samuel Morse built his Bradlee House on land that he purchased from the family of Ebenezer Morse (1763-1836). He used it as his headquarters during his experiments with electric Telegraphy. The house still stands today and is open to visitors on weekdays from 10am to 4pm during regular business hours; Saturdays are closed for lunchtime visitor access starting at 12pm until 2pm; and Sundays are open from 9am to 4pm inside or outside when doors are locked for protection against vandalism or other disturbances by children who may be disruptive during school hours. John Ahern had been born in nearby Bourbonnais on October 14th 1830 and moved to Bradley about 1850 because there were no places left for Catholic children living near Chicago after General Anthony Wayne's army driving Catholics out of their homes following the Mexican–American War . After moving here Ahern started an ice cream parlor which became very successful before going into real estate development around 1870s when he bought almost all of what is now known as McDonough County including present day Bradley Village
