Bradley is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,912 at the 2010 census. It is the third most populous city in Illinois and the most populous city east of Chicago. Bradley has been ranked as one of the "Most Liveable Cities" by Forbes magazine and has been named a "Top 10 City to Work In" by Bloomberg Businessweek. The first settlers in what would become Bradley were farmers who arrived from Kentucky around 1810. They founded a town on high ground called Green Gables after their daughter, which they named for their home state, Georgia. By 1830, there were over 100 people living in Bradley and it had developed into a small manufacturing center with two stores and three churches. A fire destroyed all but one of these businesses in 1871, but within a few years new businesses had cropped up including an grocery store and banking institution that still operates today. In 1881, an act was passed authorizing the creation of village form government for Bradley under the leadership of Mayor James Hickey Sr.. The villages were initially set up with five-member boards elected by property owners; however this system changed after several board members became corrupt and lost power toCity Manager Wirt Fenton Jr.. In 1893 Village President John Denny started construction on what would become downtown Bradley which included setting up streetlights and plowing snow during winter months; this event signaled the beginning of downtown growth that continues to this day. In 1902 local voters approved annexation by Cook County which means that Bradley became part of county government following its establishment as a village. This increase in autonomy allowed for more development including expanding retail shopping districts along Saginaw Street into what is now known as Downtown Bradley while also creating jobs at various companies located throughout town such as JBL HiFi Radio Company (later JBL Inc.), Continental Tire (now Goodyear), Robeck Rubber Company (now US Bancorp), Allied Signal (now AT&T) and many more since 2002 when Town Hall Plaza opened housing multiple restaurants/bars/stores .
