Bradley, Illinois is a small town located in McLean County, Illinois. The population was 1,524 at the 2010 census. Bradley was founded in 1871 by General James M. Bradley and his family. A post office called Bradley was established in 1872, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. The community name comes from General James M. Bradley's father-in-law, David Bradford. In 1865, General James M. Bradley led an expedition into southern Indiana and destroyed a Indian village there with his military forces. After the successful campaign, General Bradley became known as the "Father of American Military Policy." He also served as United States Senator from Illinois from 1893 to 1897 and as Secretary of War from 1897 to 1901 under President William McKinley. The first settler at Bradley were John Ladd and his wife Lois Ladd who came overland on horseback on November 3rd, 1871 while travelling through central Illinois looking for land to farm. They found 320 acres (130 ha) of good land where they built their home which still stands today across the street from the original post office building that still stands today! Mrs. Ladd miscounted when she first arrived so her husband named their house "Logan" after one of his brothers who had died young suddenly just prior to their arrival! Unfortunately for them (and for many other pioneers), Logan failed to thrive due to bad weather conditions that year (& several years later when he did try again), making it difficult for anyone else ever trying to follow suit & create a bustling small town near Chicago!
Bradley was founded in 1847 by Captain John S. Bradley, a U.S. Army officer and militia captain who purchased the land that would later become Bradley County from the Osage people. The first post office at Bradley was established in 1851, and the first school was opened in 1861. In 1865, the United States moved its military forces from Springfield to Camp Douglas near present-day Chicago after the American Civil War. At this time, Bradley became an important crossroads because it served as a supply stop on stagecoach routes between Chicago and other settlements in Cook County and Lake Michigan. The town also grew rapidly due to its location and importance as a rail junction. In 1907, the Illinois State Railroad completed a line through Bradley that allowed travelers to access central Illinois without having to go downriver or through Milwaukee County. In 1927, the Illinois Central Railroad built a new station in town which replaced an old wooden building that had been used for storage since before it was built. The new station is now known as the Bradley Municipal Building and is one of two surviving examples of early twentieth century infrastructure inBradley County.
