Bourbonnais, Illinois is a small town in the northwestern portion of the state of Illinois. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,069. The community is located in Weldon Township and is part of the Champaign-Urbana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Bourbonnais Rifle Club was formed in 1892 and still meets monthly. The first shooting protection devices were pieces of metal that could be inserted into breechblocks to protect shooters from being struck by gunfire while they were firing. These devices were not very effective and were quickly replaced by more modern methods such as safety glasses and muzzle covers. Bourbonnais is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,989 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Bourbonnais is located on the west side of the larger Kane County city of Chicago and is bordered by Park Ridge to the north, Downers Grove to the east, Streamwood to the south, and Mayfield Heights to the west. The first white settlers in Bourbonnais were four men from Kentucky who traveled overland from what is now Louisville during 1836-37. They named their new community after Henri Bourgogne (14th century French explorer), a Huguenot nobleman who had recently settled in Preble County, Indiana. In 1849, when Kankakee Township was created within Kane County and land was available for purchase near downtown Chicago from John Kinzie (the father of Abraham Lincoln), representatives from Bourbonnais met with representatives from Kankakee and organized a committee to recommend changes that would make theircommunity more desirable for settlement by European Americans. One proposal called for erecting an iron fence around the proposed village so that Indians could not come and steal goods or homes; another proposal recommended making sure that all roads leading into or out of town were graded level so vehicles couldn't bog down in deep snow drifts; finally, it recommended building schools and churches in each community so residents could get instruction in Protestant Christianity instead of Indian religion which they thought was devil worship. When Kankakee Township was merged with Kane County on April 1, 1868 into what is now Cook county we observed similar resolutions being passed at different meetings throughout much of central Illinois dealing with developing township boundaries etc., but no action ever took place until one day late in 1898 when about 50 men met at Lighthouse Tavern on State Street (now Jefferson Street) under instructions from Judge Julius Beadle who chaired what became known as "The Committee To Map The Territory" formed largely due to Henry Ford's efforts some years earlier - this group soon produced definitive maps of most if not all future counties within Kane county ....... In 1901 we reorganized our government again as a Village Government under charter granted by Mr Justice Whitehead ....... By 1907 we had grown sufficiently large enough for our own school board ...... We lost our post office Starbuck's Coffee House Due To A fire That destroyed It On November 3rd 1907 ................. Our first Baptist Church Was Built In 1909 ...... Our present name came about because Mrs Stowe decided early on that she wanted her book title “Bourbonnais” rather than something like “Kaneville”....... For many years there was great contention between various groups over whether “Bourbonnais” should be anglicized or kept French .......... Most recent Census Data shows a population increase since 2000 reaching 2289 .......... So long as people keep bourbonicating I am happy
