Bourbonnais, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,513 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in Bourbonnais were Frenchmen who arrived in 1795 and named it after their native Bourgogne region in France. In 1814, the village of Bourbonnais was platted and became the townsite of Bourbonnais Township. The township was organized into a city on March 15, 1898. On January 1, 1903, the city annexed the adjacent village of Arlington Heights which had been formed from parts of Villa Park Township on December 12th 1887. They are now considered one municipality with separate governing councils for both villages/townships and cities/townships as well as having their own police force and fire department (an accomplishment shared by only two other municipalities in Cook County). Today's downtown core has been built up over centuries since its earliest days as an agricultural center with a small grocery store being one of the first businesses to open hereabouts when Beginnings Merchants started operations around 1905-1907. Bourbonnais is located on the east side of the Willamette River and is bordered to the north by Oregon City and to the south by Arcadia. According to the 2010 census, Bourbonnais has a total area of , of which (or 97%) is land and (or 3%) is water. The community lies along Illinois Route 14, just west of Interstate 90. The first European settlers in what would become Kane County were French colonists who arrived in 1812 as part of a larger expedition led by General Napoléon Bonaparte. Many of these colonists were refugees from France's political instability following the fall of Napoleon I and his brother-in-law Louis XVIII. In addition to founding Bourbonnais, these early settlers also brought with them their culture and way of life which influenced many others in this region for years to come. In 1837, Lafayette Parish voters passed an ordinance establishing a school board within Lafayette Parish so that children could be educated closer to their families or homes instead of going off into unknowns across rural Illinois. This act foreshadowed later community initiatives such as high school education opportunities for local residents or even higher levels of education for those living beyond agricultural boundaries offered through state institutions such as colleges or universities outside of Champaign-Urbana proper during this time period. The first high school opened its doors to students in October 1838; it was called "Lafayette Academy" until renamed "Bourbonnais High School" in 1907 when it became one half of Champaign-Urbana's only two public schools system - both public schools being run via voucher programs administered by private organizations). In 1957, due largely to advances made during World War II – including innovative new transportation technologies like airplane travel – Lafayette Academy became onehalf again Champaign-Urbana’s only high school when it merged with Urbana South High School into one large educational institution known today simply as “Champaign-Urbana High School” - making Bourbonnais – once again – one halfway between Chicago and Carbondale deep inside Kankakee Valley! Despite good attendance records throughout much recent history, Lafayette Academy closed its doors for all students grades 9th through 12th on September 15th 2013 due mostly to budgetary reasons despite numerous requests from current and former students since then for reopening an reopened program if budget restrictions had notlimited otherwise! In line with other communities experiencing similar challenges over recent years especially given enrollment decreases overall across UI campus over same timeframe while property values continueto rise leading some parents choice either send their children back home rather than endure additional tuition costs associated with maintaining another type/quality Of schooling!!!
