Bourbonnais is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,724 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Bourbonnais was founded in 1837 by Nicholas Bourbons and his family. The town was named for the bourbon whiskey made there. The Bourbons are descendants of Pierre-André Ledru-Rollin, Sieur de Bourbonnais and his wife Joanne d'Arc. They first settled in what is now Bourbonnais in 1837, after moving from France to Steubenville Township near Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1840 they married Mary Babcock (née Lane). In 1847 Nicholas Bourbons purchased an estate at Pekin Heights on the north side of Chicago called Prairie du Chien which he used as a hunting ground and summer home for himself and his family until 1860 when he sold it to John Jacob Astor IV for $5 million dollars ($ today). From then until 1865 he leased both Prairie du Chien and its neighbor on the south side of Chicago from the Strode family who ran one of the largest beefpacking plants in America. During this time period some 40 different distilleries operated within a radius of about 100 miles around Chicago due to Prohibition which had started on October 15thdry Rum sales were allowed only to be carried into restaurants or Bars with a permit fromthe US government
