Bourbonnais is a small town in Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1824 by French-Canadian settlers and named for the Bourbon brand of whiskey. The name change to Bourbonnais in 1866 after the American Civil War. The town has a population of about 1,500 people today. Bourbonnais is located on the confluence of the Kankakee and White Rivers. The river forms the eastern border of the town and its banks are lined with oak trees and other trees from Kentucky and Louisiana. The Kankakee River empties into Lake Michigan just north of Bourbonnais. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Bourbonnais were French colonists who came overland from Quebec in 1763. They built trading posts along the rivers which served as stops for traders travelling between Canada and France. In 1774, these posts were combined into one post, called Fort Snelling, which became the capital of Indiana Territory during Indian Removal under General George Rogers Clark. Ida Borenage was born in Marquette County, Michigan on October 12th 1888 to Norwegian immigrants Ole Jensen Borenage (1851-1928) and May Olsdatter Hagen (1859-1913). She married Harry Laughlin Sr., alsoNorwegian, on December 26th 1916 at Marquette County courthouse where they had been married since 1917 when Harry was 15 years old according to their marriage certificate filed that same day with clerk’s office at Marquette county courthouse #14692775
