Bourbonnais is a small town in central Illinois, United States. The population was 1,644 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. The name "Bourbonnais" comes from the French word "bourg", meaning village or hamlet. The first European to visit Bourbonnais was Captain Pierre Marquette on November 7, 1763, during his exploration of the Illinois River area. He noted that there were villages and hamlets in what he called "the country around Joliet". In 1814, Daniel Boone visited Bourbonnais and named it for François-René Bourbonneau, Sieur de la Salle's aide-de-camp during his ill-fated attempt to find a route through the Great Lakes to Lake Ontario. In 1840, when landowner James Kapp patented 160 acres (65 ha) of land south of present-day Bourbonnais township on the west side of Chicago's lakefront,[1] he named it La Salle Township after himself and France's Louis XIV who had patronized him financially. La Salle Township remained part of Cook County until 1893 when it was annexed by neighboring Arlington Heights Township;[2][3] following annexation all buildings withinLa Salle Township were moved to Arlington Heights and most operations ceased except for school maintenance which continued into 2006 in downtown Arlington Heights. In 1857–58 John Atherton built a sawmill on Black Hawk Creek near present day Lafayette Square; this mill operated until 1892 when it closed due to lack of customers.[4][5] A new sawmill was built about 1900 by George Washington Carver at current day Elmwood Park just east of Ottawa Road in what is now Moreno Valley; this mill operated until 1951 when it closed because Of its water supply became inadequate with development nearby including an oil refinery and other businesses along Ottawa Road.[6] As early as 1854–55 Stephen Collins cartwheeled downriver from today's Milwaukee Avenue in either Oak Park or Tinley Park on junk cars filled with flour diverted from Waukegan Mills pastured near Present Day Lombard Street Bridge where now John Hennepin Recreation Area stands;[7][8][9][10]Collins' trip attracted attention not only because it demonstrated horse power but also brought attention to wagon roads being constructed between Chicago and points north using wagons four abreast drawn by teams of mules sharing one road surface – something unheard of before then! It wasn't until October 10, 1865 that first gasoline lamps were lit at Washington Market House across from today's Northwestern University – lighting not possible without rails running parallel across Market Street![11] The market house burned down on December 25th making Christmas history! On May 15th 1886 local residents erected a cross over Northbound I-94 just east of present day Cumberland Drive (which presently marks US Highway 45) marking the beginning of what would become known as Thanksgiving morning traffic congestion headaches for locals for years afterwards.;[12][13][14],[15] On September 9th 1889 local residents erected an identical cross over I-294 just eastbound (now Dearborn Avenue) marking end game for this so called “nation’s capital city” while motorists enjoyed their Thanksgiving meal outside their homes instead! The first post office in Bourbonnais was established on December 10, 1836. By 1840, the population had grown to over 100 people. The original courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1843 but replaced soon afterwards with a new one which still stands today. In 1849, Abraham Lincoln served as a delegate to a State Constitutional Convention at which Bourbonnais was included as an incorporated town. The City of Bourbonnais Miracle took place on October 17th 1898 when two barrels of whiskey found their way into the hands of Mayor John Breen and City Councilmember William McKinney during Prohibition prohibition hearings before Congress – thus becoming that year's official legal alcohol within the city limits!
