The original village of Bourbonnais was built on land that later became part of McLean County. It was platted in 1837 by Ebenezer Caldwell, a lawyer from nearby Athens, Ohio. A post office called Bourbonnais had been established in 1836, but it was discontinued in 1841 because no mail reached its residents from there. In 1846, when Macomb County was created, Bourbonnais became a part of it. In 1870s bourbonNAIS had two newspapers which were known as "The Bourbons" and "The Whigs". One paper lasted until 1875 while the other one continued until 1886 There are still some newspapers left today including: The Patriot (1911-1992), The Courier-Express (1989-2007) and The Gazette (2008-) Also still active is an annual bourbon festival which takes place in early November each year . After years with few tourists visiting the town due to Prohibition Era regulation; recent years have seen growth with both residential development as well as attracting more businesses to downtown . Bourbonnais was founded in 1857 by General James K. Polk and named for his French father, Marshal Jean Beauregard Bourbon. The first store in what is now Bourbonnais was built on the site of an old log cabin by Wm. J. White in 1857-58. The first post office in the community was established in 1860 and the first school was opened in 1865 by Mrs. John Meekson of Ottawa Township with 11 students from local families who made up the board of education until 1868 when it became a private school operated by Friends Meeting House No. 4]. In 1870, Wm.-J., also known as "the Butcher", started a restaurant called "The Lion's Den" which served hors d'oeuvres (sandwiches) and drinks until 1914; it still stands today as a small business on Main Street corner First Avenue South.] In 1872, Lafayette businessman Isaac Prentice donated land to build what would become bourbonnais High School; construction began that year and progress was slow due to lack of funds but finally finished in 1886] In 1896, prohibitioniste William Randolph Hearst bought 1/3 interest in the Distilleries Corporation which had been organized to purchase all distilleries then under contract from American Express Companies (AEC). He renamed it National Distillers Company (NDC) after himself and placed its headquarters at 7th & State Streets[nicknamed "Hollywood". Prohibition ended on April 15th 1920 with New York state becoming an Alcoholic Beverage Control Board member; NDC dissolved on October 15th 1925].
