It is named after the French bourbon whiskey brandy that Bourg's father had smuggled into the country while serving in the U.S. military during World War II. Bourbonnais is located at (41°20'15" N 88°42'12" W). As of the census of 2000, there were 1,613 people, 553 households, and 414 families residing in the town. The population density was 362.9 people per square mile (146.4/km²). There were 636 housing units at an average density of 158.3 per square mile (63.8/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3% of the population

Bourbonnais, Illinois is a town in Jackson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. Bourbonnais was once part of the Beardstown–Montgomery Township area of Montgomery County. The first European to sight the present-day town was Captain John Smith on July 4, 1718 when he and his men journeyed from Fort Duquesne across the Ohio River to visit Native Americans near what is now Kaskaskia. At that time there were no towns or villages in Jackson County and most of its facilities date back to before 1800. The first settler in what is now Bourbonnais was Nicholas Pontiac who arrived in 1827. He built a cabin on the east side of the river about two miles north of where today's town hall stands. Pontiac's cabin and other early buildings are still standing and can be visited during regular open hours as part of the Bourbonnais Historical Museum which opened in 1938. In 1847 Amos Hixon moved to bourbonnais from Beardstown with his family after purchasing land around what is now Mount Carmel Cemetery from Joseph Trimble for $1,500 (). Hixon set up a gristmill on Old National Road (now Davis Street) which he operated until 1861 when it burned down due to faulty construction. In 1863 Union General Samuel Pemberton's cavalry unit camped nearby while passing throughJackson County on their way south and ordered all male residents between the ages of 16 and 64 into military service for three months beginning September 15th; this event is also known as "Pemberton's Raid." Many residents deserted their homes over this period including Amos Hixon who by then had sold his holdings back to Trimble but remained living in bourbonnais until his death in 1893. A post office called "Beardstown" was established at Bourbonnais on November 3rd, 1867; it closed operations on December 12th, 1870 because of budget cuts caused by war exhaustion(). The firstStore agent was Jno Fenton (1868-1901). When statehood went into effect on January 1st, 1896 bourbonnaiians voted not to become a part of it; they instead formed their own township which would come into being six months later when Montgomery Township merged with Jackson County under state law (). On February 21st 1902 James Meehan set upbusiness at 116 Wabash Avenue () which remains one of bourbonnais' largest businesses today along with several restaurant chains such as Denny's Restaurants LLC., Applebee's Corp., Chili’s Restaurant Corporation LLC., etc.. After World War II many farmers turned toward corn farming instead of production agriculture so much so that some abandoned those efforts altogether resulting in market saturation for bourbonsais products starting around 1960 Some recent development has been new housing developments such as Baymont Subdivision #2 located just outside town limits behind Union High School which provides retail space for local restaurants as well as access to expressways providing easy access both northward towards Chicago IL & southward towards St Louis MO.; also within close proximity are several major employers like Ford Motor Company Headquarters located just west off I-66 exit 313 & immediately adjacent Interstate 69 Exit 176 overlooking downtown bourbonnai ; while some small businesses have continued locally (e.g., Pizza Place), others have closed (e.g., First National Bank) making it difficult if not impossible to locate any definitive examples giving an accurate picture Of bourbonsais history since its incorporation into Jackson county circa 1898!
